ein Informatik-Kolloquium zum Thema "Approximate Computing: From Circuit Synthesis, Architecture, to Application".

Wir freuen uns, Dich bei uns willkommen zu heißen.

Approximate computing is an emerging computing paradigm. Targeting error-tolerant applications such as image processing, multimedia, and machine learning, it deliberately sacrifices a small amount of accuracy to achieve improvement in performance and energy consumption. At the circuit level, how to design approximate circuits is attracting much attention recently. However, given the extremely large design space of an approximate circuit, it is challenging to obtain an optimized design. Furthermore, there also exist research questions of how to leverage the idea of approximate computing to design energy-efficient architectures and how to deploy approximate circuits in real applications to fully exploit their advantages. In this talk, I will first introduce the background on approximate computing. Then, I will present some solutions by our group to the above challenges, including: 1) logic synthesis algorithms for designing approximate circuits, 2) a low-cost lookup table architecture based on approximate Boolean decomposition, and 3) hardware/software co-design to effectively leverage approximate circuits in designing energy-efficient deep neural network accelerators.
